Party Ace Interview with Jay Maz

Today we sit down with Rapper and Producer Jay Maz to chat about his music, his life and the industry around him.
Thank you for agreeing to talk with us, we’re delighted to share this opportunity with our audience!
So, tell us a bit about yourself and how you got started in music.
I started a few years ago as a local rapper and then a Video director cuz music don’t sell in my country. Over time I wanted to share my story with the whole world and went to learn a lil bit English cuz if you got big dream or good product you must put the manual in English!
What would you say was the turning point for you? Was there a single moment where you decided, THIS (music) is what I’m going to do?
The best way to make good music is when you able to express your mind and feelings, it’s not the problem of decision but feelings!
I just wanted to express my mind to let the world know about things they couldn’t ignore!
How much would you say this industry is about having natural talent, and how much is about hard work?
The music industry is about big money now and doesn’t think about education; they push young people to consume drugs, getting horny, have a wild attitude to sex – exposing young people to HIV.
Many young people DM me on twitter asking me about HIV symptoms! That means people need to be educated and the music industry is destroying these youths cuz of things they see on TV!
Would you say that your music is largely influenced by the circumstances you grew up in?
Yes of course!
Everything in my music is just things I used to live with or things I’m still living with. As I grew up in the hard place and still here! I fear for my kids future and the rest of kids living the same situation that I used to – it’s like a curse! but not! Just naturally God’s plan!
I can’t blame anybody for that! but all I know and what I learnt is that life is a struggle! Only the strongest win!
Your record label Busafu Squad – did you really start it by yourself?
Yeah!! Just by myself! It was when I started my video company when I was pushing some other local artists .
Do you feel that setting up your own record label was easier or harder than getting signed under an established label?
As birdman said in a Forbes interview, “Try your own record label and you will see!”
Nothing in the world is easier or harder, it depends on what you are doing! of course you must have a lil budget from the start!
I understand that you are establishing the NABOYOTE (I Will Never Let You Down) Foundation – could you tell us a bit more about it?
The Naboyote Foundation is just the only way I could help the youth directly!
I started with my close friends! We need more education for the youth – we donate school kits, and talk about HIV with young ladies in hardest area without any organisation affiliation, we are indie!
What is your main driving passion when you write and record your music?
- RIP my Mum
- my Kids
- my family
– that’s my motivation
As a producer, what are you looking for in an artist?
Creativity and difference!
What one piece of advice would you give to a new artist trying to make it in
the industry?
I know many new artist just wanna make it and get featured with biggest names in the industry, and they all forget what they have been through when they make it!
Never forget where you came from – talk about it in order to motivate others and give them chance to believe in themselves!
Keep telling your story! Tell the world where you came from and where you goin’ to… instead of pretending being rich!
I know we are from different areas, but never forget about education! Education is the key for youth to succeed. Never destroy them cuz you think they all wick people and ignorant – help them to get better!
